Every airplane in the sky is being affected by four main forces at the same time.

Lift is the upward force.

It is created by the wings as air flows around them.

If lift is strong enough, it supports the airplane against gravity.

Weight is the downward force.

Thrust is the forward force.

Drag is the force that resists motion.
